On the second Sunday in May, ever since 1914, American children of every age treat their mothers to something special. But it’s not just the United States that celebrates Mother’s Day. All over the world, and for hundreds of years now, we have been honoring our mothers in a variety of ways.
The pampering can begin with breakfast in bed, flowers and special gifts, and a relaxing day all wrapped up with a Mother’s Day dinner. We wouldn’t want Mom to have to cook on her special day! Other traditions include cards, poetry, and even parties.
Before cell phones came on the scene, Long Distance phone calls peaked on Mother’s Day, as children far and wide called home to say hi to their mom. US restaurants claim that it the busiest day of the year, as we all treat Mom to a dinner out. The Post Office sees increased volume in the month leading up to Mom’s Day, as children everywhere send gifts home.
And, no surprise here, florists see their biggest sales in May, as they are one of the most popular gifts to send Mom. This is partly because Ann Jarvis, the founder of the United States modern celebration, handed out carnations to church-goers during the original Mother’s Day in 1910 and years after.
While carnations are the traditional flower for the holiday, any variety of flowers, including roses (wink wink) make a lovely gift!
